Oral history interviews yake a lot of work to complete for publication. The interview is the fun part, but the tape is nearly useless without a transcript. The students work with one another to complete a required transcript for every interview. We do not care who types the transcript. If the student's mother or brother will type it, that is fine. The students do the interview and are required to get the transcript completed.
We do try to make this process as easy as possible . We take the audio version of every interview, and copy the interview onto CD's so students can work on them whenever possible. We divide the interview into sections so that students have responsibility for only a small section of the interview.
We require the transcription be turned in on a disk with a typed printout. This is because if you have the transcript on the computer then it can be used in different of ways.
