The Floyd County School Board has completed its search for a new superintendent and announces the appoitment of Dr. John F. Wheeler as Division Superintendent. Dr. Wheeler, who has been serving as Interim Superintendent since November 9, 2016, will officially assume his new duties as Division Supperintendent effective April 1, 2017. The Floyd County School Board welcomes Dr. Wheeler in his new role and are excited to begin working with him as he leads the school division and students to new levels of success. The Floyd County School Board will conduct an adjourned meeting on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. A public hearing will be held at 6:00 p.m. to receive citizens' comments on the proposed 2017-18 school budget at this meeting which will be held at the School Board Administrative Office.
The Floyd County School Board met in an adjourned meeting on February 14, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. to continue the process in the superintendent search. Representatives from the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) met with the School Board in a closed session to review applications and references received for the superintendent search. After the closed session, the School Board announced that interviews for the position of division superintendent would be conducted from February 24, 2017 – March 10, 2017. The interviews will be held in accordance with the Code of VA, Section 2.2-3712.
A summary of applicants reviewed by the School Board was provided as information for release to the public. There were 26 inquires, with 18 full applications in which 13 are male and 5 are female. Nine applicants are from Virginia and 9 are out-of-state. Experience levels of the applicants include 5 current/former superintendents, 3 assistant/associate/deputy superintendents, 6 central office administrators, 3 principal/building administrators, and 1 classified as other.
The Floyd County School Board met yesterday, January 25, in a special called meeting to make an appointment for the vacant school board seat representing the Courthouse voting district. Seven individuals submitted letters of interest and were interviewed by the School Board in a closed session. In a unanimous vote, the School Board agreed to appoint Ms. Pamela Snead to the position. Ms. Snead will serve out the remaining term of the seat vacated by Linda King. The Courthouse district seat will be filled by election in November for a 4-year term to begin 01/01/2018.
Chairman Ingram commented that the School Board felt each applicant was well qualified and was very appreciative of each individual’s interest to serve on the board.
The Floyd County School Board will conduct a Special Called meeting at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the School Board Administrative Office to consider letters of interest and conduct interviews in a closed session to make an appointment for the vacant Courthouse District school board seat.
In official action on January 9, 2017, the Floyd County School Board has set its regular monthly meetings to be held at 5:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. All meetings will be held at the School Board Administrative Office.

Floyd County School Board extends deadline for accepting letters of interest for vacant school board member seat
The Floyd County School Board is seeking candidates for the interim appointment of the Floyd Courthouse District School Board seat for an intervening term beginning in January 2017 through December 31, 2017 to fill the vacancy of resigning School Board Member Linda King. In accordance with the Code of Virginia, Section 24.2-228, when a vacancy occurs, the School Board shall, appoint a qualified voter and resident of the election district in which the vacancy occurs.
Interested applicants residing in the Floyd Courthouse District of Floyd County, Virginia, are invited to submit a letter of interest to the Floyd County School Board Office to the attention of the Floyd County School Board Clerk, Janet C. Harris, at 140 Harris Hart Rd. NE, Floyd, VA 24091. The deadline for submitting letters of interest has been extended until January 18, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. The Floyd County School Board will conduct interviews of the interested parties at a date and time to be determined. The Floyd County School Board has set qualifications for the superintendent search and will begin accepting applications beginning today, January 6, 2017. Completed applications are due by February 3, 2017.
