  • WIDA Proficiency Standards
     
    On March 19, 2008, the Virginia Board of Education adopted as the English language proficiency (ELP) standards developed by the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Consortium as the statewide ELP standard for the Commonwealth of Virginia.  The Floyd County ESL teacher uses the WIDA ELP Standards as a basis for providing services to ELLs.
     
    The WIDA Consortium has developed the following English language proficiency (ELP) standards for LEP students in PreK-12:
    • Standard 1:  English Language Learners communicate for Social and Instructional purposes within the school setting
    • Standard 2:  English Language Learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content of Language Arts
    • Standard 3:  English  Language Learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content of Mathematics
    • Standard 4:  English Language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content of Science
    • Standard 5:  English Language Learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content of Social Studies
