Special Education Advisory Council

  • The Role of the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC), as defined by Virginia Department of Education Regulations:

    1. Advise the local school division of needs in the education of children with disabilities;
    2. Participate in the development of priorities and strategies for meeting the identified needs of children with disabilities;
    3. Submit periodic reports and recommendations regarding the education of children with disabilities to the division superintendent for transmission to the local school board;
    4. Assist the local school division in interpreting plans for the community for meeting the special needs of children with disabilities for educational services;
    5. Review the policies and procedures for the provision of special education and related services prior to submission to the local school board; and
    6. Participate in the review of the local school division's annual plan.

    SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SEAC) TRAINING

    Presented by PEATC in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE)

    Online Course March 8 - March 25, 2024 

    Attention, SEAC Members and Advisors!

    PEATC in partnership with the Virginia Department of Education, is pleased to offer SEAC training aimed at helping SEAC members understand the role of the local Special Education Advisory Committee in Virginia and to build a more efficient and effective advisory committee.

    This course will include information on:

    • SEAC in Virginia SPED Regulations
    • SEAC Roles and Responsibilities
    • Building Your Local SEAC
    • Organization Tips for SEACs
    • How to be an Effective Advisory Committee

    The self-paced course begins March 4, 2024 and will be open through March 25, 2024.

    The training will take approximately 6 hours and can be accessed anytime during the 3 week timeframe.
    These trainings are also open to parents and professionals who are interested in learning about local SEACs in Virginia.
