On Wednesday, October 30, 2019, the Floyd County School Board and the Floyd County Board of Supervisors met to discuss the proposed air conditioning project for Floyd County Public Schools. Through their collaborative efforts and forward-thinking, the Floyd County Board of Supervisors approved the installation of air conditioning in all schools.
Based on budget parameters set by the Board of Supervisors, the original proposal was redesigned, with no compromise on the quality of equipment to be installed. The current project will include air conditioning in all classrooms and instructional spaces. The system is easily expandable to include the additional spaces (hallways, lobbies, bathrooms, storage rooms, and FCHS Old Gym) at a later date.
On December 20, 2019 project managers from Nor-Well Corporation (installers of the AC), Thompson & Litton, Mr. Cox, FCPS Maintenance Supervisor, and Dr. Wheeler met to review the organization and scheduling for the installation of the units. A schedule was developed.
Majority of new classroom A/C equipment has been set in the classrooms and on exterior equipment pads.
New Combined Cooling and Heating Equipment for Willis and Check Elementary gymnasiums is scheduled to be installed over winter break.
Existing classroom unit heaters (5 at FES, 3 at IVE, 3 at WES, and 3 at CES) are scheduled to be replaced with cooling/heating units over winter break.
Piping, insulation, controls and electrical work supporting the new equipment is ongoing, with FCHS and CES more complete than the other three schools.
Replacement of existing heating valves in classrooms will occur when the new control systems are activated in the schools as the new air conditioning equipment is powered up.Completion of all the AC units is projected to be the end of May, 2021.
