VIRGINIA RETIREMENT SYSTEM (VRS)
The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is an independent state agency which delivers retirement and other benefits including disability and life insurance to covered Virginia public sector employees which includes Virginia public school divisions. Membership in the VRS is automatic for full-time employee upon employment.
Benefits vary depending on when an employee becomes a VRS member:
VRS Plan 1
Membership date is before July 1, 2010, and vest as of January 1, 2013.
VRS Plan 2
Membership date is on or before July 1, 2010 and not vested as of January 1, 2013.
VRS Hybrid Plan
Membership date is on or after January 1, 2014 or Plan 1 or Plan 2 members who opted into the Hybrid Plan during the period of January 1-April 30, 2014.
