English Learners

Program Overview

Cara

The FCPS English as a Second Language program is dedicated to equipping English Learners (ELs) with the language skills needed for academic and social success. Our goal is to prepare ELs to thrive in school and beyond.

Students qualify for language assistance based on the WIDA Screener and receive services until they demonstrate English proficiency through the WIDA Access for ELs Assessment. Support is provided through a mix of pull-out and push-in instruction by ESL teachers, aligning with the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework (2020).

Our program ensures ELs are placed in age-appropriate, grade-level classrooms, where teachers use effective strategies and scaffolds to support language development. ELs actively engage in learning across all subjects alongside their English-speaking peers. ESOL teachers collaborate with classroom teachers to provide targeted instruction, helping students build academic language and literacy skills while accessing grade-level content.

How ESL Services Support Students

Our ESL program helps students succeed by:

  • Strengthening language proficiency and communication skills.
  • Providing rigorous, content-based instruction that fosters collaboration and problem-solving.
  • Ensuring access to advanced academic opportunities and support services.
  • Creating inclusive learning environments that honor students' diverse backgrounds.
  • Encouraging active participation of ELs and their families in the school community.

At FCPS, we are committed to supporting every English Learner in reaching their full potential through high-quality instruction, collaboration, and strong family partnerships.
